Cool Waiting Area

Speculative Idea

Material: Hydrogel & thermo-wires

Functions: Cooling and sun protection

Application: Urban waiting areas, e.g., bus stops

As architects, gardeners, and citizens, this group of speculators know how uncomfortable it can get in an overheated city center in the summer. Their idea aims to help remedy this by creating cool urban waiting areas where people can rest and cool off. The waiting areas would be equipped with hydrogel, which cools by evaporation. In addition, thermo-wires could provide palm-shaped sunshades that follow the sun depending on the temperature.

»We thought that the summer of 2050 will be just as hot. And in the city, where it’s also getting hotter and hotter, people could use cool waiting areas. You can imagine it like this: a small bus stop. Instead of walls, it has curtains covered with the materials (hydrogel) so that they have this cooling effect. We also thought of incorporating palm leaves or a palm construction made of thermoactive wires that can be raised or lowered depending on the temperature. The basic idea is to help people and provide cooling spaces without the need for additional energy.«
